Hmm. That’s pinteresting.

So. Here’s the thing.
I like Pinterest. I think it has a certain potential for planning in various areas of my life. But…I tend to find things that are majorly one-off/vintage/not available for Courteney. And then I can’t get that one item out of my head. Take this fabulous floral printed dress in citrus colours. I know, right? It’s one of the most ladylike dresses. Ever. And the fact that yellow and green are basically my favourite colours doesn’t help the fact that it was an ebay auction dress that sold a couple months ago but still haunts Pinterest for me to see and want. Bad. Enough that I made a whole outfit around it…out of other things from Pinterest that I can’t have.
I have a goal though.
I. Must. Find. This. Dress.
Okay, so maybe not exactly this dress, because that would probably mean tracking down someone through ebay and threatening to steal asking if I could buy the dress of of them. But I have to find an equivalent.
Follow me on Pinterest to see the full details of this outfit (of which, the only attainable things are the J Crew flats and the hair bow, which I already have).

a hobby.

I have this…er…hobby…(if you could call it that). I am bent on recreating styles of photographs from years past. With that comes a lot of watching of youtube tutorials for hair and makeup, studying old photographs, memorizing poses from that era, and recreating the right lighting and post processing (obviously I am not doing actual film, so the last bit is just work in photoshop). I find it fascinating.
Lately (haha, actually, just in general) I’ve been feeling like I’d like to look like I belong in the 1940′s. Today was a relaxed day for me, as I got a lot done earlier in the week. So I cleared our dining room, set up lights and shot away.

I ended up taking about 200 photos to get it just right. (The pose is actually rather awkward…and I was staring right into the light). In post processing I started off by fixing some stray hairs with the clone brush, as well as editing out my nose ring (believe me…it’s easier to edit it out in photoshop than to actually take it out) I also added a vignette – which was common in this style of photograph (which would have happened naturally if I was using more lights, but…I was too lazy to set them all up) I also cropped it, so you wouldn’t see my hand holding the remote. ;)

After that, I changed the photograph to black + white, darkening the red tones in the image (to make the lips stand out more). Because I wanted the tone of the photograph to have that hand coloured feel, I painted in all the colours in layers and set them to either soft light, or multiply (depending on how light or dark I wanted it) I also changed the colour of my top to green (because I like how green looks with my new hair colour)

And lastly, I ran the photograph through a custom film filter I’ve made in Alien Skin Exposure 3, so that it had some grain and texture. Et voila!

PS: I don’t always have to take pictures of my myself, you know. If you’d like to do some pictures like this…let me know! I love doing it.

I am quite fond of being a redhead. I am also quite fond of my hairdresser, and the great job she did with my new hair colour yesterday. Huzzah for awesome hairdressers!

a funny little valentine

Happy Valentines Day, everyone! I know that Valentines day can be a tricky subject. But the way I see it…there’s nothing wrong with showering your loved one with affection over and above what you may every day. As far as all the chocolates and flowers and expensive dinner reservations go…well…do with that what you will. But for today, my valentines comes in the form of a song. Enjoy.

Courteney Rodda and the Other Guys – My Funny Valentine from Courteney Rodda on Vimeo.

PS: If you were wondering… This is the (re)start of a project that I have had on the back burner for a while. You may have remembered a few years ago I sang in a short lived jazz group called “The Free Time Four” Unfortunately, the Free Time Four lacked free time, and we disbanded. I’ve always kept the idea in the back of my mind though. Whenever a fellow musician would mention they had an affinity for jazz, I would casually mention my plans for fame and fortune a low key jazz ensemble, and hope they dug the idea. And as a result of my hint dropping, “Courteney Rodda and the Other Guys” has been officially been born.
A big thank-you to Mr. Rob Herrett, who has agreed to be the guitar player extraordinaire for the project. And of course, Mr. Dave Rodda will be accompanying on drums. We’re still looking for the last “Other Guy” to be our bass player…but for now I’m quite pleased with this little ensemble (and I hope you are too.)

today. I filmed a video.

I am majorly stoked. Today I worked on a feature for the blog that will (hopefully) become a regular thing. It is…however…a butt load of work. Here’s a little screen grab of what you will behold in a few days:
